Tips on handling Dashboard week!

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Introduction
Dashboard week is a week-long challenge where each day we are given a random dataset and asked to create a Tableau dashboard to present the next day. As things move at a thousand miles per hour during Dashboard Week, I’ll give you a few pointers on how I handled it.

1. Don’t overdo it!
Explore a few key ideas based on the data given and create a few charts to find interesting insights.

2. Fail fast!
If there is a major blocker, then try another path. Remember, there are many ways to skin a cat!

3. Have a plan
Create a plan and use timebox your day to manage your workload. When creating the dashboard, remember to follow the visual best practices.

4. Focus on key insights and stories
Have a story to tell and share your insights on presentation day.

Most important of all, have fun and enjoy the ride!.
