How to create a box plot without whiskers?

Boxplot

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

A new trick I learned this week is how to create a box plot without whiskers/ without a box plot. I have created a worksheet like this with the dataset Average SAT scores.

Click on the analytics tab and click on Median with Quartiles.

Click on reference line and create a min average score and make the line without any label.

Similarly, create another reference line with the average score as the maximum.

Now right click on the axis and in edit axis uncheck include zero. Thus we can create a box plot without whiskers.

Good Luck!
