Going beyond the Bar Chart (Part 2)

Continuing from last edition, we will now look at the following charts:

  1. Histogram
  2. Butterfly Chart
  3. Gaant Chart

Histogram

Use Case: A histogram is useful in visualizing data over continuous intervals. Each bar in a histogram represents the frequency

How to create a Histogram:

    1. Right-click on the measure and create a bin

2. Drag the measure (Sales(Bin)) and frequency (Count(Sales)) to their respective axis

Divergent Graph or Butterfly graph

Use Case: A divergent graph is useful in comparing two data sets contrasting each other such as male vs female, income vs expense, positive vs negative, completed on time vs overdue etc.

How to create a divergent graph:

  1. Move the field (Age Brackets) and both measures (female and male) onto the respective axis
  2. Right click the left chart’s (female) bottom axis and press edit axis. Set the scale to reversed and use a fixed axis and input a number slightly larger than the largest number (72000000).  Do a fixed axis for the right chart with the same number to keep it symmetrical.

  3. Create a calculation of 0 and place it in the middle between the two other measures
  4. Selecting on this 0 mark, drag the age brackets onto Text and change the mark type to text

  5. We now need to click on one of the measures (male) and dual axis.
  6. Change the mark type for both measure values back to bar

  7. Synchronize axis and fix the axis start point to 0 and end point to the same number in step 2.

    If the text isn’t showing, right click the axis and select “move marks to the front”

    The result should look like this:

  8. Repeat steps 5 to 7 for the other side of the graph after creating another 0 calculation
    The final result should look like this:

Gaant Chart

Use Case: A Gantt chart is useful because it visually represents project tasks, timelines, and dependencies, enabling effective planning, scheduling, and tracking of progress.

How to build a Gaant Chart:

  1. Your data first needs to be in the following format
  2. Add Job/Education to rows and Start Date to Columns

  3. Create a calculation for the end date as such:

  4. Drag Duration onto size and sort by start date as such to complete the chart
