Alteryx is a powerful tool used by data analysts to clean, transform and develop a customised workflow to generate data for visualisation. This is achieved by various tools that can be dragged onto the workflow canvas in Alteryx.
Today, I’ll start by introducing some of the most common tools.
Input Data. Allows for the connection to a range of file types including Alteryx Database, Comma Separated values, JSON, Microsoft Excel, and SQLite. The Input Data tool also allows for the connection to a variety of databases including MySQL, Snowflake, Teradata, and Amazon Aurora.
Browse tool. The Browse tool displays the data. Very handy to observe the changes that have occurred in the workflow.
Output Data. The output data tool allows the user to write the results of the analysis to a database or file.
Formula tool. A powerful tool to perform calculations and generate new fields to uncover vital insights from the data.
Filter tool. This tool allows the user to query the records in the data by creating expressions that compare columns against a value. For example, we can create queries to filter records in the customer age column greater than 30 as True and false for other values.
Unique tool: This is a handy tool that allows the user to select the column to find unique records. This tool has two anchors, a unique (U) anchor that will return unique records and a duplicate (D) anchor that will return duplicate records. For example, if we have a column containing customer ID, we can use the unique tool to differentiate between unique and duplicate records.
Select tool: This is a handy tool to include, exclude, sort, reorder and modify the data type of a column in the dataset.
