Dashboard Week Day 5 – Gettin’ Silly With It: AFL Silliness with Height and Weight

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

The task

Using cleaned AFL data, we jumped right into finding our story.

The approach

Despite tiredness and headache, I decided to have some fun with it. Instead of relating it to the game and trying to do an analysis within the game (which I believed was overdone), I tried to do something silly with their heights and weights instead and made comparisons to things outside of Australian Rules Football.

Achieved an MVP relatively early, so am proud of that. Concept was very simple, but I moved forward into having fun with it.

Moving forward

With little time, I chose a very simple approach which was to have a parameter in which you could make comparisons in height based on your choice.

I also used metrics to help people without knowledge of AFL understand height and weight.

Simple enough

RETROSPECTIVE

What I did well

  • Creative ideas
  • Simple, easy to understand (I hope)

How can I improve

  • Not enough knowledge base to implement what I wanted to create (unit charts)
  • Could’ve dug in a bit deeper.

I hope you enjoyed this post.
