Dashboard Week Day 1: What Do You Know About SpaceX?

Today marks the start of the Dashboard Week Challenge for DSAU19, where we are tasked with creating one dashboard per day for the entire week. The first dataset we received focuses on SpaceX, providing extensive data on SpaceX launches, rockets, cores, capsules, Starlink, launchpads, and landing pads. As someone with limited knowledge of space science or SpaceX, I initially found it challenging to begin working with such a vast dataset. However, I approached the challenge with an open mind and began exploring the data in Alteryx to understand the scope of what we were working with. I chose to work with 3 datasets: Rockets, Launches and Payloads. Here’s my Alteryx workflow:

As I delved deeper into the dataset, I discovered several fascinating insights that can be gleaned from the information provided. One of the most significant findings was that the Falcon 9 rocket is the most successful rocket in SpaceX’s history, with over 150 launches and an 80% success rate. This achievement highlights SpaceX’s ability to develop a reliable and efficient rocket system.

Another interesting discovery I made was the improvement in the reusability rate of the Falcon 9 rocket over time. In the early years, only a small percentage of the rocket was reusable, but now, a majority of it can be reused, leading to a significant reduction in the cost of launching payloads into space. These insights only scratch the surface of what can be uncovered in the SpaceX dataset, and I look forward to exploring more of it in the days to come.

When I began working on my dashboard, I quickly realized the importance of time management and balance. Striving for perfection is admirable, but it is essential to avoid getting too carried away in the pursuit of it. I aimed to strike a balance between being friendly and personal while remaining informative and professional, ensuring that my dashboard is accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of knowledge about space science or SpaceX.

In conclusion, the first day of the Dashboard Week Challenge has been an exciting and informative experience. It has highlighted the importance of time management and balance in project management while also providing a glimpse into the fascinating world of space science and SpaceX. I am eager to explore more datasets in the days ahead and uncover more fascinating insights.
