Dashboard Week 4: Does Music Affect Mental Health?

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Introduction

We have finally reached the fourth edition of Dashboard Week and it is yet another fun round of creating vizzes using Kaggle datasets. This time, we were tasked to create a viz to investigate if there is any impact of music on mental health. The dataset from Kaggle can be found here. It consists of 736 responses from individuals.

Alteryx Workflow

The dataset is pretty clean and there is little prep to be done before ingesting it into Tableau. However, I created a simple workflow to transform the columns on the types of music genre that the individuals listen to. In order to do make the data ‘tall’, I connected the crosstab tool, and export the data as a csv. This is the final workflow.

Insights: Tableau dashboard

This is the final dashboard. I explored the individuals’ profile and music habits first. I delved to examine if there is any impact of music on their mental health and mood. People of across all ages cited that music had improved their mental health condition (on average about 74%). While music had improved their mental health, it is noted that people who are aged between 40 to 44 years old said that music has no effect on their mental health at all. They may need other forms of stimuli to improve their mental health such as emotional support, physical activities, going out with their friends, etc.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the relationship between music and mental health is a profound and symbiotic one. As we have explored in this blog, music has the ability to boost mood, provide emotional release, reduce stress, foster connection, and empower individuals on their path to well-being. So, let us embrace the harmonious journey, allowing music to heal and inspire us as we navigate the complex landscape of our mental health. Remember, when words fail, music speaks.
