Tableau’s map drill down

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

This week we learnt how to use Worksheet/Dashboard Actions to perform map drill down on Tableau. To demonstrate this, I have created a resume for the cutest cat in the world – my cat Lily (note: Your cat is also the cutest cat in the world. All cats are the cutest cat in the world).

1. Prepare the dataset

Tableau’s map drill-down could definitely still work without coordinates, as long as you have the location hierarchy correct. However, for Lily’s home locations dataset, I have decided to use the coordinates for each residence since both of her homes in Perth are really close to one another and have the same post code.

2. Create spatial field using lat and long of residence

3. Create a map countries sheet

4. Create another map countries sheet, then rename it to cities map

5. Drag makepoint field onto the maps layer

6. Change country layer to map, change makepoint field layer into circle (add any other customisation you want)

7. Create a string parameter with no current value

8. Create country not selected

9. Create country match (the value will be the one selected in parameter)

10. ‘Change Parameter’ action
