How to solve the Alteryx Spatial Challenge (Week 51)- Part 2

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

In this blog, I am walking you through the step-by-step process of solving Part 2 of the Alteryx spatial challenge of Week 51. For Part 1 How to Solve the Alteryx Spatial Challenge (Week 51)- Part 1 – The Data School Down Under

Here is the challenge Challenge #51 link: Spatial County Coverage – Alteryx Community.

Step 1:

As demonstrated in Part -1, Create points and area radii. Now use the ‘Summarize‘ tool to combine all the area radii. Here goes the configuration.

Step 2:

Drag in the ‘Spatial Match’ tool. Connect the output of the ‘Summarize‘ to the Target anchor and the ‘County Polygon’ input file to the Universe and, Run and look into the Result of the Match anchor.

Step 3:

Drag in the ‘Spatial Process‘ tool and connect to the M anchor of spatial match, and make the configuration as follows

Step 4:

It is time to find the area of the overlap of the county in the entire store network. To achieve this, Drag in the ‘Spatial Info’ tool to find the overlap area

Step 5:

Now as a final step we find the percentage of overlap using the ‘Formula‘ tool,
[Overlap AreaSqMi]/[Count AreaSqMi]*100

There are multiple ways to tackle challenges, but solving them provides greater clarity on how to use Alteryx tools effectively. Enjoy the process!
