How to Create a Jitter plot in Tableau?

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

 Jitter plot:

Jitter plots allow you to separate overlapping marks on a view. They reveal hidden data and makes it easy to visualize distributed data points.

In the below Visualization, you can see how each State has been overlapped to each other. We can see how individual data points are for product category on a single scale.

Let’s see how jitter plot can help us visualise in the following example:

Steps to create Jitter plot:

Step 1:  Create a calculated field and name it as index . Use the Index () function and divide by 25 as shown below:

Step 2: Drag the Index from Measures to columns and edit the table calculations and then click on the specific dimensions and make the category and state as addressing fields.

By implementing the above formula, we can clearly see how the furniture is distributed across the view and it avoids overlapping.

Therefore,

we can use jitter plot helps us in better visualise the density of the data and the relationship between 2 variables.
