I had a bit of a challenge when I needed to create a special Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for my project. It turned out that this KPI required a bit more than just looking at revenue trends on a typical line chart. So, I decided to do a bit of research and stumbled upon a fantastic YouTube video that explained how to take a plain old line chart and turn it into an interactive KPI that could give my project the boost it needed.
First, I needed to select the line chart from the visualizations, and then, of course, add the date and revenue fields to the mix. These were the building blocks I needed to get started on my journey from a simple line chart to a dynamic KPI.
Creating Measures: Measures are the secret sauce that makes your KPI dynamic and informative.
I started with Total Revenue which is the big number on the top.
I changed the format of the Total Revenue to string to use it as a Title of my chart.
I calculated % YTD change
Finally the Subtitle
Back to the Visual: it was time to integrate these measures into the visual.
For Title I went on the conditional formatting and selected the measure Title_Revenue which was previously formatted to string.
Formatted it to increase the size and change font.
Then moving on to the Subtitle I selected the conditional formatting again and picked my field Subtitle_Rev.
Formatted the chart to remove the axis and their titles. And we have our KPI.
