Day 3-Global Terrorism Attacks

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

The learning curve on day 3 of dashboard week has become more steeper as the challenge was to analyse world terrorism data from 1972 to 2017. Given the nature and sensitive topic , I have decided to put in an extra yards for analyzing the data.

Data prep : There are 2 data sets , one without 1993 and the rest with all other years . I had to union these them in alteryx using the union tool .

I started analysing the data on each region and found out that the Asia region has the highest number of attacks . I have also created a dual axis trend charts that gives a picture on attacks vs fatalities over the period of time .

The interesting insight i found was that in Asia , the incidents are more compared to middle east . however , the fatalities are high in middle east when compared to asia . This tells us the impact is higher in middle east despite having less incidents .

To get into a deeper picture on each region , I have created side by side maps and trends for all regions for a simple and detailed understanding to the audience.
