On the first day of the dashboard week , we needed to complete SWDCHALLENGE .
The task was to answer 3 questions from the dataset . The data set contained the source and destination countries and where the money is going to from individual country.
The tasks are as follows:
1. Who Donates ?
2. How Much Do they Donate?
3. Why Do They Donate ?
I wanted to answer the above set of questions uniquely and effectively by show casing the key elements such as where is the origin of the source and the respective destinations of the funds on a map so that it is easy to visualize and understand.
Hence i have taken up the task to create origin and destination maps in tableau.
1. Create a path for the source and destinations . This can be done by union the dataset twice in tableau . One for the source and other for destination .
2. Create a calculated field that enables us to the join the main datasource with another dataset which has latiude and longitude .
if right([Table Name],1)=”1″ then [Donor] else [Recipient] END
3. Once the join is done , bring in the lat and long into rows and columns shelf and enable line chart type along with pathid into the view to create the origin – destination map. Select a country from the filter to view specific country values.
The origin and destination maps helps us clearly identify the source and destination countries easily . Since there are too many , i have highlighted the top 5 on the view to make it easier to focus .
The origin map helps us answer the first question easily . A set of bar charts has been created to analyse questions 2 using a bar show casing the most funds obtained in a descending order. Action filters are used to enable the connectivity . The purpose has been shown on the tool-tips that answer the question 3.
Overall , it was a great learning to implement origin and destination maps in a real time scenario and visualise the data in a simpler way .
