Dashboard Week-Twitch Top Game Analysis

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Today is the first day of Dashboard week, and our challenge is getting data from twitch IGDB API, making a Tableau dashboard and publishing to Tableau Public.

Twitch is an interactive livestreaming service that spans various content genres, including gaming, entertainment, sports, music, and more.

The data of this dashboard comes from the endpoint below:
https://api.igdb.com/v4/games
which contains game names, release data, ratings, follows and platform.

Firstly, different tops games are listed either by ratings or by follows. The number of top games can be changed via a drop-down menu. Tooltip is provisioned as well to show name, rating, release date and summaries of each game. By comparing 2 lists of the game, we can see top-followed games and top-rated games are quite different.

Secondly, top 5 games are listed in a bar chart for 3 largest flatforms, which are PS5, switch and XBOX. Drop-down menu can switch between top-rated and top-followed. We can see they are partially overlapped. With this function, you can see that some games are so popular that it is the top followed game for more than one platform.

Last, I want to analyze game released over time.

If you want to know more, the dashboard is shown as below:
