Dashboard Week Day 5 – Corporate Booking using CLUE data

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Huge Dataset

The data set was Census of Land Use and Employment (CLUE). It had lot of data related land-use trends, spatial data for blocks in Melbourne, Parking areas,  cafes/restaurants and aggregated land use data.

Today’s task was a pressure test. We had lesser time than usual as it was a fun Friday with a presentation at 3 pm. We were asked to create a dashboard and write a blog by that time.

I decided to take the spatial data route to showcase my dashboard. This helped in 2 ways.Firstly, I could still build a story around a particular use case of the usage of the dashboard as a tool.  Secondly, this would help me plan well and reduce my time on data cleaning.

Plan

I used Alteryx to get analyst the spatial files. First, I joined the block-level data and get restaurant data together. Second, I also joined the parking lots to be shown. Since there was not much time left and I wanted to leave the interface clean with less crowded locations. I just showed the restaurants in a suburb selected. The workflow can be seen below.

Dashboard

I chose a simple layout based to focus on ease of use. Since in a corporate booking, major considerations are the no. of people attending the event and location (suburb). I started with a question to select the no. of people attending and then gave the user the option to select the suburb. To aid the decision on parking spaces, I coloured the suburbs based on the availability of parking spaces (using CLUE aggregated data).
