Dashboard Week – Day 4: ABS Census

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Today was the fourth day of Dashboard Week, and the dataset is the ABS Census first release.

Data Preparation

First thing that I noticed was the data was not clean coming through. Due to this, I spent many hours building the workflow and constantly tweaking and refining it. The data across the 2 tables needed lots of cleansing and transforming, so I was quite busy with Alteryx today.

My Alteryx workflow looked like this:

Definitions

CFNC
Couple family with no children.

CF_C_und15
Couple family with: Children under 15.

CFNC_und15
Couple family with: No children under 15.

1PF_C_und15
One parent family with: Children under 15.

1PFNC_und15
One parent family with: No children under 15.

OthF
Other family.

Dashboard

There was such limited measures, so I decided to make some of my own. The dashboard I built was with simplicity in mind, with a show hide button for filters and parameters.

This is how the dashboard looked:

The Northern Territory and Northern Queensland have the lowest mortgage ratio per family. The top 10 Regions for highest Mortgage to Families are always situated near the major capital cities, with 5 o the top 10 being near Perth. The ACT and Western Australia have the highest average mortgage to families ratio at 46.5%
