Dashboard Week – Day 2 – NSW Trains Data

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

The Brief

We were tasked with downloading and visualizing data regarding the live traffic data of trains from transport.nsw.gov.au. I looked specifically at the Sydney Trains data. We have tried the whole day to scrap the data from the API. Even though we managed to pull out the data, it was hard to clean up the data. So, I have tried to join all the stations data with the opal card data.

Getting the Data

The data came from e stations has latitude and longitude and so it was easy to create a spatial object. Here is the workflow that I created.

This data was then outputted and visualized in Tableau. Eventually, I produced the following dashboard. We can select a route in this dashboard and the map shows all the stations and the path. In the tool tip we can see the number of journeys too.
