Dashboard Week, Day 1 – Transport APIs

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Today is our first day of dashboard week. This morning we were briefed by Craig that we needed to use an API from Open Data and create a dashboard based on the data we downloaded.

I started by downloading some straightforward data about rest areas in NSW. Using this I created a simple dashboard you can view below or by clicking here. The user can then highlight rest areas by certain features such as having a playground or toilet facilities.

I then decided to return to Alteryx to create an app that allows you to input a chosen route. You can then choose the facilities you desire in a rest area and it will find the nearest matching rest stops and the distance between them. You can see my workflow below.
