Dashboard Week – Day 1 – Melbourne Cup 2018

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Today, it was our day one of our dashboard weeks at Data School Down Under. We heard about it, read about it and it is here!

Our head coach Craig decided to give us task on Melbourne Cup 2018. The data source for today comes from racenet. By noon most of us finished out data preparation – it has some regex and a few cleaning stuff. My sample workflow is here. This involved a lot of parsing and I know it is ugly, but it works and that’s all it matters!

Anyway, once the data was ready to play with, I got stuck in as  I don’t have much knowledge in horse racing.  I spent some time trying to analyze the data that I gathered. I have used set actions to filter my viz.   Here’s today’s viz, let’s see what tomorrow brings!
