Dashboard week – Day 1 Ice and Fire

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

The first challenge of dashboard week is about a popular TV series Ice and Fire. We need to use API to get the data and then visualize the data. Let’s take a look at how to do it!

In Ateryx

In order to get most data, I downloaded data from API – The Books firstly and got data about all the books, then I downloaded data from the characters URL and the house URL to get the information about characters and houses of each character.

In Tableau

To make the visualisation intuitive, I used a Map to show the demographic analysis of characters. By hovering over each Region, we can see some details. In addition, I compared the number of characters and the number of cultures of each region to see the diversity of demographic composition.
