Dashboard Week – Day 1 (Domain.com API)

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

During Day 1 of Dashboard Week, we were given the task to make the call to Domain.com through an API key and then clean the data in Alteryx and finally present it in Tableau. First, we created an account in Domain.com, registered our project, added the free API and obtained our Client_ID and Client_Secret. It took us some considerable time to explore documentation on ‘Agents & Listings’ and ‘Properties & Locations’ endpoints. I selected to explore on Rental properties in NSW. After some hit and trails, I was able to get the following workflow. I also used a batch macro to run the workflow multiple numbers of times. There was a limit to make only 500 calls per day max, so we cached and run the workflow.

Then in the other half of Day, I explored the data in Tableau and made the following dashboard to find a suitable property for rent.
