Hi everyone, my name is Bruna Guglielmi, and I’m from Cohort 26 at the Data School in Sydney. Today, I’d like to share my experience working on our first client project during the 6th week of training.
It was quite an interesting experience for me. Our task was to deliver two dashboards and learn about Snowflake, a tool none of our team members were familiar with. We worked as a team of five, plus a Scrum Master, to deliver the project.
Besides that, I had to prepare an Alteryx presentation for the Meet and Greet event happening on Wednesday. This meant I had to step away from my team for 2-3 hours to get ready, practice the presentation, and test the setup. It was a great experience, and I highly recommend volunteering to give one of the presentations—whether it’s on Alteryx or Tableau.
In summary, during one week, we had two and a half days to think about the project as a group, two full days of training (where we learned about SQL and Alteryx Spatial), and I also had to prepare the presentation for the Meet and Greet as a volunteer.
I now understand why people say Data School is intensive training. This experience is a perfect example: you constantly switch between tasks and projects, which probably mirrors real workdays in a company. You also develop the soft skill of managing your life in the middle of chaos, realizing that everything will work out in the end haha.
Just a brief note about the project: no one had prior experience working in a team to deliver a project. None of us had ever been a scrum master or project leader before, so we all learned together through experience. Having a weekly check-up and feedback session with the coach on the Monday after the project really helps. Everyone can share what they liked, and didn’t like, and how we can improve next time.
I am extremely happy with both client projects we’ve had so far. It’s definitely the best part of the training, though it initially terrified me during the interview process. At one point, I almost reconsidered joining the company because I didn’t think I could handle being a project manager. But even though I haven’t been one yet, I already feel confident that everything will work out, thanks to our excellent team and the support we received during this period.
Living, learning, and growing at Data School is a wonderful experience, and I can’t express enough how grateful I am for this opportunity to develop my skills.
