Client Project Tips

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

It’s the end of our 7th week at The Data School and we have just completed our second client project. I’d like to share some of my experiences and some things I learnt while working on our client projects. In this blog post, I will share 6 tips to help deliver a successful client project.

Ask Questions Early

During the Monday morning briefing, it is important to ask any questions you have for the client. If you ask questions too late into the week, they may not be answered in time and you may run out of time to work on the project or correct any mistakes.

Regular Meetings

During our first client project, we didn’t have stand up meetings. This made it hard for us to see what everyone was up to and if tasks were on track and if help was needed elsewhere. For our second client project, we had daily meetings which was useful in understanding where everyone was up to. This also meant work was not overlapping which would waste resources and time.

Utilise The Scrum Board

During our first client week project, we had a scrum board set up in teams. Tasks were added at the beginning of the week but it was quickly forgotten about throughout the week. It was rarely updated to reflect the work that was already done or being worked on. It would have been helpful for the team members and especially the team lead to check on the progress of the tasks and allocate resources to tasks tat were falling behind to improve the efficiency of the team.

Keep The Team Motivated (Team Lead)

For our first client project, our team lead (Ethan) was very thoughtful and brought snacks for the team to motivate us throughout the week. This increased the efficiency and morale of the team.

Ask For Help

If you get stuck or need help during the project, ask for help early. Ask for help from the other team members, the team lead or the coaches. There is a high chance that someone around you is able to offer help.

Offer Help

It is important to work together as a team. If you see someone is struggling and you have time to help, offer help. It will only make the project more successful.

I hope these tips have been helpful.
