[Behind the Scene] The Thought Process Behind my Viz that was Featured as Viz of the Day #VOTD

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Hold on, what is Viz of the Day (#VOTD)?

I happen to get a viz I made about Airbnb in Sydney featured as VOTD which can be viewed here. But before I walk through my thought process when creating it, in case you haven’t known, Tableau Public select a visualisation every weekday to be featured as Viz of the Day (#VOTD). There are various reasons why a viz can be featured, summed up nicely in this writing here. My personal take is it probably got featured because it shows how the most common dataset topic out there can be analysed and visualised in another way along with how the tools can be used in a different way.

When I was building the viz, it was the Iron Viz season so I was referring to the scoring criteria: Analysis, Storytelling and Design. In this writing, I will also break it down into these three. Just keep in mind, that this is not intended to be a guideline for Iron Viz (I’ve never participated before and don’t expect me to have ever been a judge).
