Alteryx Spatial & App – How to easily find a toilet during the barbeque time

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Imagining a situation:

One day afternoon, you are planning to go somewhere for barbeque. But during lunch, you drink too much liquid. So, if you want to choose a barbeque place, the priority is to look for a place with enough toilets around it.

In this Blog, I would like to build an application by Alteryx based on some of the spatial tools. In order to help people in the barbeque site find a toilet easily.

  1. we need to get the dataset of all Sydney barbeque and public toilet locations.
  • The toilet data is a .xlsx file with latitude and longitude.

  • The BBQ location data is a .yxdb file with a spatial object column.

  1. Pre-processing data.
  • For toilet locations, we need to create points for each latitude and longitude.

  • For the BBQ locations, a trade area of 0.5 kilometres should be identified. Making a 0.5-kilometre Buffer to look for the nearest toilet.

  1. After pre-processing, it’s ready for the spatial match. But the most important thing is to consider which one is the target and which one is the universe.

  1. After matching two location data, using the filter tool and two selected tools (one for the BBQ location and buffer, and the other for the toilet around it). Deselect toilet for one and the other deselect.

  1. Finally, use the map report tool and the Render tool to export the result.

The configuration of the map report tool is like this. There are two layers of points created by two selected tools.

  1. Build the application by dragging some interface tools. To make the trade area buffer and the filter area can be changed in the interface.

So, we got the whole analytic app workflow.
