Adding Mapbox maps to Tableau

This post was originally published on The Data School blog between 2018 and July 2025, before our program was renamed to MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. References throughout this article to “The Data School” or “DS” all refer to what is now MIP’s Analytics Career Accelerator. The program, its people, and its commitment to launching outstanding analytics careers remain the same – just under a new name.

Tableau has lots of features when it comes to using maps. In this article, I will be discussing one such feature where you can add your customized maps in Tableau. Tableau gives the option to add your customized Mapbox maps to Tableau. If you have a Mapbox account, you can create your own maps and then can add them to Tableau using an integration URL that you can copy from Mapbox.

Customizing your maps:

After you have created your account at Mapbox, go to studio.mapbox.com and click the new style.

Once you click on a new style, a new pop-up will appear where you can any template of choice. A lot of options are available here. Either you can select from pre-built styles or can create your own style from scratch. Moreover, there are variations to select from the ‘Choose from variation’ section. For this blog, I am choosing a basic map and spring variation. Once done, just click customize basic.

Then you will be redirected to your chosen map style to do more customization. On the left side of the screen, there are lots of options that can be customized to suit your requirements.

Once you have made changes, on your top right, click Publish to publish your map.

Once, published, click on the share next to the publish on the top rights side. A pop-up will appear. Make sure you are in the developer section (check the top right section of your pop-up). Now, in the Developer resources, select ‘Third Party’ -> ‘Tableau’ in the drop-down and copy the integration URL.

Adding Mapbox Map to Your Tableau

Once you have copied the integrated URL from the Mapbox map, open your Tableau. Here, I am using the sample superstore dataset for this blog. Go to ‘Map’ in the toolbar then in Background Maps click ‘Add Mapbox Map’. Now, fill in the style name of your choice and paste the integrated URL, and hit ok.

Once you have successfully added your map, you can now either add/subtract layers or use all the options available in Tableau for maps. As you can see below, I was able to use my customized map.

Thank you for reading my article and I hope this article will be helpful for your future Tableau project.
