Although I’ve only just stated my Tableau learning journey, I know for a fact that I’ll forever be learning something new on Tableau. With that being said, let’s starts with the 5 tips and tricks that I’ve learnt so far:
1. Mark Boarders
A seemingly under utilized tool – the mark boarders, can be used for a range of things such as differentiate majorly clustered data, creating a nice format design or creating highlight selection. Here’s a link on how to use mark boarder to highlight select.
2. Create a parameter list from field automatically
If you need to make a parameter with a list of values then instead of manually creating the list try this tip. Not only will the list of value populate automatically, but the parameter will self name itself as well. Very much, a 2 bird, 1 stone situation.
3. Add multiple fields at once (union)
An example where this tip can be applied, is when we need to create a union between multiple tables. Just shift select all the items and then simply drag items into the canvas. Voilà, Tableau has created a union between all four tables.
4. Base Table Switching
When creating relationships between multiple tables, you may have selected the wrong table to be your base. Instead of starting from scratch, let Tableau do the heavy lifting with 2 clicks. Start by right clicking on the table you wish to replace your current base table. Select the third option down ‘Swap with base table’ and watch the magic happen before your eyes.
5. Colour match your labels and marks
Using colour with purpose is very important when creating easily coherent dashboards at a glace. Not only does colour matching your labels and marks allows this to happen, it also enables you to remove those nasty legend all together.
